Tights by Peeters
These tights are inspired by a sparkling bouquet featured in a larger still-life painting by Clara Peeters. Born around 1588 in Antwerp, Clara was among the few professional female painters of the 17th century. Her banquet pieces, known for their detail in depicting magnificent flowers alongside food, cups and other attributes, left an influence on painters from the Northern Netherlands.
There were many women named Clara Peeters in that time, which made it difficult to research into her life story. What is certain is that this Clara Peeters did not want to remain unknown. In each of her paintings, she added a self-portrait, hidden in the gleaming reflection of a copper vase, a glass decanter or a goblet. If we look closely at this painting, we can count her small image eight times!
